Frame Drum Making Workshop with John Proctor
Saturday Nov. 28 (1-5 PM)
Sunday Nov. 29 (10-2 PM)
Frame Drum Making Workshop
The frame drum is one of the oldest known instruments, found across cultures and traditions around the world, it is thought to be the first drum to be invented.
The ocean drum is a percussion instrument that can produce soothing sounds which sound just like the ocean.. The ocean drum is held by the frame, with the heads horizontal, and played by rolling the wrists so the drum gently tilts in all directions. The metal beads inside roll over the bottom head like water rolling over the shore. Different speeds produce different sounds. Stopping and starting suddenly creates crashing wave sounds. It bears a similar resemblance to the frame drum.
In this two day, hands on workshop, you will build your own 18” Frame Drum or 16" Ocean Drum using yellow cedar, goat skin, and rawhide. The process is physical and focused, working with simple tools and natural materials in a craft based environment.
Schedule:
Saturday 1pm - 5pm
Sunday 10am - 2pm
Day one is spent shaping and finishing the wooden frame and preparing the drum head. Day two, once the skin has set, you will complete the drum by lacing the handle and making your beater.
Guidance is offered throughout as you move through each stage of the build, with space to make it your own through the choices and effort you bring to the process. As the drum comes together, so does a personal connection to the instrument. Many people find the experience brings up a sense of memory, reflection, or intention in a way that feels natural.
You will also be introduced to the roots and uses of the frame drum, including how rhythm and voice can work together, and how to care for your instrument over time.
You will leave with a drum you built yourself, and a connection to it that is entirely your own.
John Proctor owns and operates Earth Tones Studio in Guelph, Ontario. He builds drums and teaches workshops on drum making for a variety of drums including Frame Drum, Ocean Drum, Djembe, as well as percussion instruments made from recycled and found materials. He also facilitates drumming and soundscapes for those who respond to the call of the drum beat.
