Opening the Gate - Sounding for Wellbeing with Gary Diggins

Opening the Gate - Sounding for Wellbeing

Down through the ages and across the world, human cultures have sounded vocally and instrumentally as a ceremonial expression. For thousands of years, individual and collective sounding has remained central to communal rituals. Older cultures understood that intentional sounding mediates a connection between the seen and unseen dimensions. Whether a medicine woman, a tribal shaman, or the village healer, each practitioner was skilled at conveying a mystical current and magical energy through sonic expressions.

In this session, Gary Diggins will guide participants through accessible practices that allow us to bridge the material and spiritual worlds. Our intent will be to cultivate wellbeing for ourselves and others. Some of the topics will include: shaping the breath, introducing vocables, creating overtones, working with drones and rhythms, offering spontaneous soundscapes, generating rhythmic chants, developing sonic prayers, understanding the Axis Mundi, tapping one’s musical intelligence, listening on three different planes, and shapeshifting through sound.

No prior musical training is necessary to participate and each participant is encouraged to find their own authentic voice in the process.

Gary Diggins

Gary Diggins has authored five books on the therapeutic benefits of sounding and listening. He has served in private practice as a Soundwork and Expressive Arts practitioner for over forty years. Gary’s work has taken him to various countries and communities globally. He currently teaches at the Create Institute in Toronto, a three-year expressive arts program. Gary is based on a rural property in the Beaver Valley where he daily connects the surrounding landscapes with therapeutic soundscapes. Visit www.garydiggins.com for more details.

Through a combination of singing, acting, and movement, students will learn the essential skills that make up musical theatre while developing confidence, creativity, and teamwork.

Each class includes fun theatre games, vocal warmups, movement exercises, and rehearsal time as students work together on several musical theatre numbers. Along the way, participants will also learn valuable audition skills such as projecting confidence, telling a story through song, and presenting themselves on stage.

The program culminates in a relaxed and celebratory performance where students will present 3–4 musical theatre songs for family and friends. This final showcase allows students to experience the joy of performing in front of an audience while celebrating everything they have learned.

Lights Up! is welcoming to both beginners and young performers with some experience. The focus is on creativity, encouragement, and helping every student discover their unique voice on stage.

Living Magic

Living Magic is a 1.5–2 hour somatic experience focused on slowing down, nervous system regulation, embodiment, and real human connection. This practice invites you to reconnect with your true self and the natural sense of magic that lives within you, supporting you in feeling more present, grounded, and embodied in who you truly are.

Men's Connection Circle with Bernard Verkaaik

Men's Connection Circle with Bernard Verkaaik

This circle is a space for men to slow down, be fully heard, and connect honestly with what is present in their lives. We work with emotional awareness, personal responsibility, and heart-based reflection in a way that supports healing and growth. This is not a fixing space. It is a witnessing space where you will safely express yourself together.

This men’s circle is hosted by Bernard Verkaaik, facilitator of many Healers Lab gatherings and founder of Quantum Calm, a healing practice focused on grounding, emotional regulation, and heart-centered awareness.

Bernard will use the Paz&Flow Connection to Self method, a structure that guides all participants to develop two skills: process emotions in a healthy and empowering capacity, and also practise being available to hold another person in a grounded and compassionate way. In his practice with individuals, couples and groups, Paz has discovered that this method is integral and impeccable at restoring peace, and bringing clarity as to how to proceed when connecting and communicating with others.

Structure of the Evening (2 hours)

  1. Welcome & Introductions (10–15 min)

  2. Grounding Meditation (5–10 min)

  3. Sharing Rounds (70–80 min)

  4. Closing Round (10 min)

Elemental Dance Play with Leah Fae

Elemental Dance Play

This class explores dance and play with the elements—Earth, Water, Fire, Air, and Ether—and how these qualities move through us, interact, and evolve in relationship with each other. Through music and embodied exploration, we’ll play with these elemental qualities, solo and with others depending on your comfort. Classes include guided exploration, free movement, sacred stillness and integration. No choreography and no prior dance experience required. Come explore your elemental nature through play, dance, and the resonance we create together in a welcoming, non-judgemental space.

Leah Fae is a movement guide, yogi, and dancer devoted to creating grounded, inclusive spaces for embodied exploration and connection. Her work is rooted in curiosity, play, and a deep attentiveness to how bodies move in relationship — to themselves, to others, and to shared space.
